Short description

Tablets are indicated for the treatment of anxiety states, a pathology in which it has proven its effectiveness in relieving the accompanying symptoms: tension, agitation, insomnia, apprehension and irritability, among others. Also, in the treatment of anxiety disorders with or without phobic avoidance and in anxiety attacks or agoraphobia. Patients who simultaneously present symptoms of anxiety such as depression have improved their symptoms after the use of this drug.

Alprazolam causes CNS depression, so patients who are administered it should be warned that the product suppresses osteotendinous reflexes, so they should be careful when operating vehicles or precision machinery.

In elderly or debilitated patients, it is recommended that the lowest and most effective dose be used, in order to avoid the development of ataxia or over-sedation.

Alprazolam should be administered to severely depressed or potentially suicidal patients with appropriate precautions. The usual precautions for patients with compromised renal or hepatic function should be observed when administering Alprazolam.

To discontinue treatment with Alprazolam, in accordance with good medical practice, the dose should be reduced slowly. It is suggested that the daily dose be reduced by 0.5 mg every 3 days; some patients may require a lower dose reduction.

Withdrawal symptoms have been reported following rapid or abrupt discontinuation of benzodiazepines, including alprazolam.

These symptoms range from mild dysphoria and insomnia to a major syndrome which may include abdominal cramps, vomiting, sweating, fear, and seizures.

In some patients receiving recommended or high doses of alprazolam for relatively short periods (1 week to 4 months), seizures have been reported when the dose is decreased rapidly or if treatment is stopped abruptly. For this reason, the dose of alprazolam should be reduced or withdrawn gradually.

Although no withdrawal effects have been observed in patients who were stopped abruptly after 6 months of therapy, such withdrawal symptoms have been reported following abrupt withdrawal of other benzodiazepines.

The severity and incidence of withdrawal symptoms are related to the dose and duration of treatment and frequently occur after rapid tapering or abrupt discontinuation of the drug. Eventually, it becomes necessary to reinstate treatment with Alprazolam at low doses to suppress withdrawal symptoms.

Individuals with a tendency to drug abuse, such as alcoholics or drug addicts, should be closely monitored if treated with benzodiazepines in view of their predisposition to habituation and dependence.
