Elica ointment is a corticosteroid preparation, the active substance of which is mometasone in a dosage of 0.1 mg per 1 g of the preparation. The ointment is aimed at reducing inflammation and itching in skin diseases. In addition to mometasone, the preparation may include additional ingredients to provide a soft structure and stability. Usually used auxiliary components such as:

  • Vaseline, which serves as the base for the ointment, provides softness and ease of application to the skin.
  • Paraffin, which helps to create a protective layer on the skin, retaining moisture and promoting faster healing.
  • Wax, which is added to thicken the ointment and improve its texture.
  •  Antioxidants, such as butylated hydroxytoluene, to prevent oxidation of the active and excipients, extending the shelf life of the drug.

It should be noted that the composition of the auxiliary ingredients of Elica ointment may be slightly modified, so for more accurate information, read the composition of the ointment on the package to avoid allergic reactions.

Action of Elica ointment

The ointment works by acting on the skin cells, changing their response to inflammation and having the following actions:

  • Anti-inflammatory: When the skin suffers from inflammation, certain cells are activated in response and release substances that cause redness, itching and swelling. The ointment helps to reduce the production of these inflammatory substances, thereby reducing the symptoms of the disease.
  • Anti-allergic: The medication blocks the pathways by which allergic reactions develop, helping to control them.
  • Immunomodulatory: The ointment affects the immune system locally, reducing overactivity that can lead to inflammation and irritation.
  • Reducing discomfort: In addition to reducing inflammation, ointment Elica reduces the sensitivity of nerve endings in the skin that are responsible for the sensation of itching.

Application and dosage

Elica ointment is used to treat eczema, psoriasis, various types of dermatitis and sometimes even insect bites. It helps to relieve inflammation and reduce the symptoms of these diseases.

The exact dosage of Elica ointment is determined by a medical professional who will take into account the type of disease and its severity, as well as your age.

General dosage recommendations

  • Eczema and psoriasis: The ointment is applied to the affected areas in a thin layer once a day. The usual course of treatment should not exceed 2 weeks.
  • Allergic, seborrheic and contact dermatitis: The medication is applied to the affected areas of the skin, also once a day, but the duration of treatment may last from two to four weeks, depending on symptoms and response to treatment.
  • Insect bites: To relieve inflammation and itching, it is sufficient to apply the ointment once to the bite site.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity: You should not use the ointment if you have a known allergy to mometasone or any other component of the drug.
  • Skin infections: The drug is contraindicated in skin tuberculosis, syphilis skin manifestations, viral skin infections (e.g., herpes or chickenpox).
  • Vaccination period: The ointment should not be applied to the vaccination site.

Side effects

  • Local reactions: Most common are itching, burning, redness or dryness of the skin at the site of application. Occasionally, rashes may appear.
  • Skin thinning: Prolonged use may lead to thinning of the skin, stretch marks (striae) and pigmentation changes.
  • Overgrowth (hypertrichosis): Increased hair growth in areas where the ointment has been applied.
  • Systemic reactions: Although rare, when used on large areas of skin, the active ingredient may be absorbed into the bloodstream, which may cause a decrease in corticosteroid levels in the body.

Interactions with other medications

  • Topical medications: If you use other creams, ointments or lotions on the same areas of skin where Elica ointment is applied, this may alter the absorption of the medication through the skin or increase side effects. It is always recommended that you keep an interval between applications of different topical products.
  • Corticosteroids: If Elica ointment is used concurrently with other identical medications, this may result in increased absorption of corticosteroids, which may increase the risk of decreased immunity or impact on hormone balance.
  • Immunosuppressive drugs and vaccination: When using Elica, caution should be exercised when combining it with immunosuppressive drugs or during vaccination, as this may affect the body's immune response.

Elica ointment and Elica - M cream

These are two different forms of Elica. Unlike Elica ointment, Elica - m - cream may contain additional components in the form of antibiotics or antifungal components, for the targeted treatment of infections. This makes it suitable for a wider range of skin problems, including infectious diseases such as:

  • Bacterial skin infections: elica-m cream can be used to treat skin infections caused by antibiotic-sensitive bacteria. These may include folliculitis, impetigo or secondary infected dermatitis.
  • Fungal: With the addition of antifungal ingredients, Elica-m cream is effective against conditions such as candidiasis, mycosis and dermatophytosis.
  • Eczema: It can be used to treat various forms of eczema if the condition is complicated by bacterial or fungal infection.
  • Allergic and contact dermatitis: When antibiotic or antifungal ingredients are added to Elica-m cream, it becomes more effective for treating dermatitis that is complicated by these infections.
